Alcohol induced psychotic disorders are chronic problem because persons with alcohol induced psychotic disorders trend to consume alcohol again. Thus, caregivers are the key persons for relapse prevention. Therefore, if caregivers are well prepared in order to provide care giving, this will lead to effective care. The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate care giving preparedness among caregivers of persons with alcohol induced psychotic disorders at Suan Prung psychiatric hospital, Chiang Mai province. The study sample consisted of 307 caregivers of persons with alcohol induced psychotic disorders. The research instrument used was a questionnaire consisting of two parts: 1) Demographic Data 2) The Care giving Preparedness Questionnaire, developed by Supranee Somboon (2005) based on Stewart and Archbold’s concept (1986), and modified by the investigator. The instrument demonstrated validity (0.89) and reliability (0.98). Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The results revealed that the overall care giving preparedness among caregivers of persons with alcohol induced psychotic disorders is at a moderate level (X=1.99, SD=0.51). Considering each dimension, it was found that care giving preparedness in the area of physical (X=1.94, SD=0.68), emotional (X=2.04, SD=0.62), health care services and resources support (X=1.76, SD=0.59), stress management during care giving process (X=2.01, SD=0.70), self-care and care giving satisfaction (X=1.97, SD=0.78), management of emergency (X=2.01, SD=0.70) help and required information seeking (X=2.06, SD=0.741), and overall caring (X=2.15, SD=0.93) are also at a moderate level. The results of the study could be served as preliminary data to develop intervention regarding knowledge and caring for those caregivers, especially in the area of health care services and resources support, emotional and stress management, as well as psychological support in order to prepare them in providing effective care.
