Benefits and harms of alcohol: Since ancient time, whisky or alcohol has been part of the drinking culture for man. It has many religious values and forms important components in herbal drugs. It is also used in celebrations and guests' receptions as well as many other functions. However, ancient people and religious teachings reprimand the members not to fall prey to alcohol because of the following harmful effects: 1. It makes us lose our senses and self-control as well as causing dishonorable be never or disgracing out or others' dignity. For instance, we may speak without a second thought, act aggressively, violently, offensively or harming others. 2. Our working capacities may be retarded because our brain, liver or kidneys are impaired. Therefore, we may not be physically or mentally strong enough to face heavy tasks. As a result, our families are affected because of loss of income. If we fall sick, we may have to be admitted into the hospital and it is a burden on the government's part. Honor and dignity are parts of every human being: God bestows honor and dignity to everyone who was born in this world. These two virtues are thus sacred because they are given from the above and no one can violate them. Everything on earth is under man's control and management and we must respect each other from the day we were born until after we die because life is eternal. We still love and miss each other even though we may depart from this world. Man's weaknesses: Buddhism calls man's weaknesses as ignorance, which comprises of greed, anger and misguidance. However, Christianity gives man's weaknesses a different name. It is the seven evil rebellions, namely, arrogance, stinginess, misery, jealousy, greed, anger, laziness and rebellion that disguise in all of us and ready to come out when triggered. Civilized world: Ancient people were addicted to drugs, marijuana, heroine, causing their lives to be shortened. At present, these things are considered illegal. Many deadly diseases existed in ancient time, such as diarrhea, tuberculosis, polio and malaria which claimed many lives. However, at present scientists discovered many vaccines that prevent these diseases. The painful experiences in the past made us learn to triumph over things that destroy our lives so that we can live longer. At present, Thai public health is becoming more creative in its approach to improve our health by using innovation in promoting health through exercises, healthy food and many other forms of surveillance, etc. Alcohol is not a Common Product anymore: Progress makes us smarter and well informed of the tricks employed by producers or distributors of alcohol who try to create image that drinking alcohol is the beverage of people of high status and is used in important and honorable occasions. However, many people overlook the dangers of alcohol. Statistics on people drinking alcohol indicates that 40% of people commit illegal acts, 51% develop mental stress, 48% suffer from depression, 410% have lung cancer and inflated blood vessels and 40-60% road accidents, respectively.
