Objective : To identify the symptoms and factors associated with long term adverse drug reactions from methylphenidate in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Method : The study was done during 1 January to 30 April 2007. Fifty-nine children with attention deficit disorder who were treated at the Mental Health Center for Children and Adolescence and prescribed methylphenidate for 2 or more years were purposively selected and evaluated for drug adverse reactions. The data were analyzed using wilcoxon sign rank test and pearson correlation with p ‹ 0.05. Result : Forty-three patients (72.89%) had at least 1 adverse reaction. The common symptom found was as follow: loss of appetite (16 case, 27.11%), repetitive behavior (8 case, 13.56%), fatigue (6 case, 10.17%), and insomnia (6 case, 10.17%). Patient’s weight was not affected. Average height of the patients classified by age after drug use was lower but not statistically significant.. Compare to the standard height for age, 3 patients (5.05%) were consider short. After drug use, no abnormality to hematological system and heart rate was found. Some patients had abnormal EKG and pre-hypertension, but the relation with drug use could not be established because of lack of baseline data. Patients with drug reaction were, on average, younger than patients without drug reaction. Doses had direct association with severity of insomnia. Duration of drug use had reverse association with loss of appetite Conclusion : The adverse drug reactions from long term use of methylphenidate in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are evidenced. However, there was no effect to patient’s weight and height.
