Objective: This study aimed to survey causes of the mental retardation in children in Sappasithiprasong Hospital Ubon Ratchathani provinces during 2006. Materials and methods: The study was a retrospective descriptive study methods. Study subjects were the OPD Developmental Clinic of Sappasithiprasong hospital consisted of 105 retarded children and 105 parents of mental retarded children. The data were collected from OPD card, and indepth-interview during June-December 2006. Results: The results showed that the most patients were male (52.4%). The Parents’ age was between 20-30 years old (48.6%). The mother of 91.3% was received antenatal care of 13.9% has genetic mental retardation history. The study revealed that the retardation mental had highly occurred in patients during post natal period of 87.6% with 29.0% of seizures cases and 18.0% of jaundice cases. Conclusion: The study results are motivated to improve the natal period care which can prevent the mental retarded. In addition, the activation program and the development progressing of retarded mental children should be intensive considered.
