The purpose of this study were to study the characteristics of social support in terms of emotional support, career-belonging-financial support, information support and social procedure as well as alcohol availability in the community be family members, relatives, closed friends, colleagues, superiors, neighbors, community members and organization involved which located in the community and to find the correlation between social support and alcohol abstinent period. The sample of this study consisted 82 alcoholics who used to receive treatment from treatment centers and have readmitted to Chiang Mai Drug Dependence Treatment Center between February to July 2007. The quantitative data was collected by using interview and was analyzed by descriptive analysis and the correlation was investigated by Ordinal Regression Model. Besides some quantitative data was collected from 6 patients who received treatment form Chiang Mai Drug Dependence Treatment Center and stayed sober and 21 participants namely family members, closed friends, one who quit drinking and organization involved in the community and was analyzed by content analysis. The result revealed that the samples received emotional support mostly in terms of congratulation, encouragement and concern by taking care of, assurance, trust and the statement concerning to their health condition. In terms of career-belonging-financial, it had a lower ratio than emotional support and was from their family members. The samples who were employed received career support from their colleagues and supervisors. As for information support, the samples received information about disadvantages and effects of drinking alcohol and sources of treatment from mass media and health personnel. The samples had good relationship with their closed friends and conversed about general topic but not seriously into abstinence. Rith their friends who kept drinking, it found that there was persuasion to drink by reasoned "test one's feeling" while neighbors did not give any suggestion by reasoned "stop drinking depends on one's mind". In community, there was campaign to reduce and stop drinking which the sample did not participate in. Instead they participated in the local tradition fair and drank. Also in the community, there were manufactured sources, distributed sources and credit buying system. There was no data found that any organization or any community that had promoting policy for reduce and stop drinking concretely. The result of the analysis using ordinal regression was shown that emotion support influenced abstinent period significantly. (p-value‹.05). The correction of prognosis was 38.7%. The result of this research can be applied as the basic data for health personnel in developing alcohol treatment model. It can also encourage health personnel to be aware of the social support for alcoholics who came to receive treatment. Moreover, it can also encourage family members and community to be aware of providing social support and changing attitude to alcoholics in order that they can maintain abstinence and become sober eventually.
