An Intervention study of alcohol dependent by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Harm Reduction of the alcohol consumption. The objective of this study was to study the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Harm Reduction on alcohol drinking behavior. Method: The subjects were alcohol dependent admitted in Khon Kean Drug Dependent Treatment center Data collection was done between 5th December 2006-31th May 2007 and recover at least 1 week from detoxication. There were 30 subjects received CBT for Harm Reduction on the alcohol consumption completed, 6 session in three weeks, each session lasting 1-2 hours. Then follow up thee months after the program finished at two weeks, the first, the second and the third month. The measurement variables were stopping drinking (remission) more than 30%, decreased the quantity and frequency of consumption to the low risk level (Partial remission), relapsed rate and dropped out rate at the 3rd month evaluation. The result of this study was found that 30 patients were male, average age 35.83 years old, most of them were single 43.3%, graduated with school and bachelor degree was (73.30%), had smoking history was 70%, had family problem was 23.30%, had no legal drug abused was 80% and no severe physical/psychological diseased was 46.70%, After the third month follow up, the remission rate was 40%, the partial remission rate was 10%, relapsed rate was 16.67% and dropped out rate was 33.33%. As for who decreased their drinking had alcohol consumption was 12 (1.15) drinks/week on average, frequency of alcohol consumption was 3.67(0.58) days/week. The starting age of alcohol consumption less than years old was , and statistically significant related to the remission at the level of 0.05 (OR=7.5, 95%, CI=1.25-45.15, P=0.03) Conclusion: The result of CBT for Harm Reduction on alcohol consumption is effective for change behavior to reduced the quantity and frequency of drinking to the low risk level and stopping more than 30%.
