Psychiatric consultation as so – called consultation liaison psychiatry, was very important in general hospital to specify psychiatric diagnosis and treatment of social psychiatric problem of patients. Consultation liaison psychiatry had various good aspects such as decreased the time to cure at hospital, thus it could decreased cost. Patients can recovery to their daily life early. This descriptive study aimed to find out prevalence patients who were sent to psychiatric consultation from the other division in Buriram hospital, epidemiology, physical diagnosis, capacity of psychiatric evaluation and psychiatric management. Data were collected from July, 2005 to Dec, 2005 by interview with patients and medical doctors based on DSM-IV criteria. It was found that psychiatric consultation prevalence were 1.1% ; male 59.5%, female 40.5%. Major proportion were referred from internal medicine. Delirium was the most common psychiatric diagnosis, then Substance related disorder, Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorder, Mood disorder, and Adjustment disorder, respectively. The most common physical disease were gastrointestinal disease, followed by neurological disease, infections disease, metabolic diseases and post operative stage, respectively. The most common chief complaint was confusion, followed by thought or suicide thought or attempt. The capacity to evaluate psychiatric disorder by the physicians was found that they could only evaluate some symptoms. The psychiatric management was medication for 93.5%. This research could be the basis data to plan for developing the teaching of psychiatric consultation liaison and find out concerned factors and cure psychiatric consultation liaison which often found in physical disease group, such as Delirium Future study should be find out whether psychiatric disorder will influence to the physical disease or not and which is the concerned factors.
