Problem/background: Suicide is a major public health problem that causes losses in human resource. The psychiatric disorders relate to suicidal behavior among attempted suicidal patients. Objective: To study the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in attempted suicidal patients. Research Design: A descriptive study. Setting: Department of Psychiatry, Phranakorn Sri Ayutthaya Hospital. Materials and Method: Medical records of attempted suicidal patients attending Psychiatric Unit in Phranakorn Sri Ayutthaya Hospital from October 2007 to September 2008 were reviewed. The data was analyzed and presented in frequency and percentage. Results: There were 80 patients in this study. The most of them were diagnosed as adjustment disorder (45.0%), followed by depressive disorder (22.5%), schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders (11.3%), substance-related disorder (8.8%), personality disorder (5.0%) and anxiety disorder (3.7%). Conclusion: The result of this study will be useful for developing the surveillance system to prevent suicidal behavior of psychiatric patients.
