Stigma related to mental illness and consequent discrimination of people with mental illness and their families are the most serious obstacles to the improvement of mental health care and the quality of life of those who suffer from mental disorders. Over the past few years several programs have been undertaken to fight stigma. These efforts were often successful and created new knowledge about ways of fighting stigma and discrimination. The presentation will describe some of the measures that have been used in these programs and list lessons that have been learned in their course.
