Abstract Objective To evaluate the functioning of the multidisciplinary child protection team of Thammasat University Hospital in the following areas; abilities of the team in taking care of abused children and the families, difficulties encountered with case management and treatment, and problems concerning multidisciplinary collaboration. Method Semi-structured interview was conducted with each member of the team and some of the social workers who were taking care of the children in child care institutions. The social workers had experience of participating in the team meetings. Results Difficulties regarding multidisciplinary approach include: 1) misunderstanding among the team staff in the goals, purposes, and procedures, 2) differences in the time needed to work with the cases among the members of the team, 3) conflicts and inconsistency in the information the members obtained from the child and family, 4) unsatisfactory relationship between the team, as a whole, and the children and families, and 5) the lack of knowledge and skills needed to deal with the cases. Conclusions Effective multidisciplinary team functioning requires definite goals, purposes and procedures and these should be clearly laid out by all members of the team. It is advisable that the team consists of a case worker or more who works on the project, if possible, full time and does not have too many other responsibilities. Regular meetings between the team and the child and family are essential to establish a collaborative relationship. And there is a need for the team to have further training and research conducted.
