Abstract Objective To study various aspects and characteristics of amphetamine psychosis in order to gain basic information and to compare the results with previous studies from other countries. Method This retrospective survey was conducted by reviewing the patient records of Somdet Chaopraya Hospital diagnosed as amphetamine psychosis with admission in 1998. Results Two hundred and nine patients with complete criteria were included in the study. Majority of them were male in their 20's. Most were admitted for their violent behavior with relatively acute symptoms. The patients mostly abused amphetamine by smoking 3 - 5 tablets per day for about 1- 3 years. Most of the patients exhibited paranoid delusions and hallucinations resembling paranoid schizophrenia. Almost all of the patients were treated with conventional antipsychotics with favorable outcomes. Admission periods were about 2 weeks and 1/3 of those who continued to follow up relapsed later on. Conclusions This study revealed that most of the patients showed symptoms of acute paranoid psychosis resembling schizophrenia and were admitted for their violent behavior. Results of this study were similar to earlier reports from other countries. Number of patients tend to rise steadily following rapid epidemic of amphetamine. There should be plans and strategies to cope with this group of patients in prevention, treatment & follow up and also for future research and study.
