The increasing numbers of the prisoners, which corresponded with the numerous criminal problems, has impacted on the prisoner’s physical and mental health. This study was done among the 30 female prisoners and 28 male prisoners who convicted to the offences against life and body in the Central Female Prison and the Klongprem Central Prison during June 2003. To study the target population’s mental health status and their mental health need were the aims of this study. The prisoners who informed consent, who had the ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing Thai, and who had no limitation in hearing, were included in this study. Focus group discussion and content validity observation were done in the six groups. Content analysis and frequency analysis were used. The study revealed that the respondents perceived their mental health status as their feeling of stress, frustration, boredom, distress, suicidal wish, irritation, being pressured and being repressed. The perceived causes of mental health problems were nine issues as the prison context and environment, the rules and regulations in the prisons, the inappropriate occupational training, the prisoner’s homosexual behavior, the prisoner’s families and their relatives contact, the staff’s behaviors, the colleagues among the prisoners and the punishment and the life after released consideration. They coped with the problems by using the two methods of emotional consolation and asking for help from others. The used methods were due to the problem characteristics, resources and their previous experiences. They need mental health care, forgiveness, family and social acceptance, funding, occupation and dwelling. From the understanding of mental health problem and its causes among the convicted against life and body offences prisoners, the study results can be utilized for enhancing the mental health care management in the prisons.
