Abstract Objective To study problems due to amphetamine use in workers in a battery factory in Bangkok, related factors, and treatment approaches. Methods Cross-sectional study in this sample was done with demographic questionnaires, knowledge about and attitude towards amphetamine questionnaires, Thai Mental Health Questionnaire and blocking test immunochromatography of urine sample. The medical treatment and self help group were started for amphetamine abusers after assessments. We had followed up the abusers by urine monitoring for 6 months. Results The sample of 185 cases consisted of 85 males and 100 females, age between 20 and 73 (mean 36.35 year). Mental problems in this sample assessed by Thai Mental Health Questionnaire consisted of anxiety 29.5%, depression 6.65, somatic 18.6%, psychosis 3.8% and social 50.35%. All of the 10 abusers were male and all of them accepted the urine amphetamine test results. Mean duration of amphetamine use was 34 months. All of the abusers used amphetamine by inhalation with a mean dosage of ? -1 tab per day. The reasons of amphetamine use were : increased working performance (87.5%), peer group (75%), and pleasure effect (25%), respectively . Seventy-five per cent of abuser group were multiple substance abusers. There were no significant differences between abuser and non abusers in mental problems, knowledge about amphetamine score, and attitude towards amphetamine score. After 2 weeks of medical treatment the abusers were followed up by urine monitoring for 6 months and 9 cases had no amphetamine use. Conclusion Urine monitoring program and self help group are helpful for management of amphetamine problems of factory workers in addition to education.
