Psychosocial rehabilitation has witnessed a surge of interest during the last century and has emerged as a new and promising discipline in the practice of mental health. This movement is gaining more importance in most of the developed countries where the availability of resources and manpower is not a real difficulty. In the west the subject of rehabilitation has also seen a lot of conceptual changes as well. The closure of mental hospitals and introduction of community psychiatry provided a lot of input to the new ways of practices and policies in this area. Similarly the changes in the philosophy of rehabilitation form the concepts of handicaps to recovery and reintegration of mentally ill back to the society have laid the foundations of new horizons in this specialty. This paper discusses the development of such concepts and describes the current trends and the related practices in psychosocial rehabilitation. Special mention will be made about the current practices in UK with discussions about their merit and limitations.
