This study was a quasi-experimental research aiming to examine the effects of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy on depression in adolescents. The study was conducted among junior high school students with mild depression whose depression scores were between 15 and 20 according to the assessment of the Children’s Depression Inventory. The students with similar characteristics regarding gender, academic results in the past semester, and depression score were paired and each pair was randomly separated into the experimental group and the control group with 18 students in each group. Students in the control group received the usual counseling service from the school whereas students in the experimental group received Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. The studied was carried out from 14 January until 20 February 2002. The obtained data were analyzed with two-way analysis of variance method and the pair contrasts were examined with Scheffes method. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in post-test depression scores in the experimental group at a statistical level of .01, compared with the pre-test depression scores. In addition, the depression scores in the experimental group were lower than the scores in the control group at a statistically significant level of .05. Considering the results of this study, the application of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy is recommended. Psychiatric nurses and other personnel working with adolescents should be aware of the importance of mental health in adolescents. A policy for the promotion of mental health and prevention of depression in adolescents should be set up in communities. The practical application of Rational Emotive. Behavior Therapy should be supported to reduce depression as an approach to preventing more severe mental disorders.
