รายละเอียด / Details:

Violence has become a major preoccupation of the general population in many countries. It takes many forms and touches most groups in society. Media ad other means of communication continue to bring violence from all over the world to our eyes and ears. In the public mind, psychiatry is linked to problems of violence because of the erroneous belief that people with mental illness are responsible for much of the violence and because of the notion that psychiatry may contain knowledge that would allow the prevention of violence. The frequency and severity of violent acts are also considered to be indicators of the mental health of the population. The vagueness of the notion of mental health and the uncertainty of the limits and potential of psychiatry contribute to the strength of these associations that are harmful for psychiatry and for efforts to improve mental health of the population. This lecture will attempt to clarify the relationship between violence, psychiatry and mental health and propose measures that might be helpful in reducing violence and in the promotion of mental both respects will be defined with due regard to the situation in different parts of the world.
