Psychiatric services in Japan have much developed du ring past 20 years after a revision of Mental Health and Welfare Act in 1987. Various psychiatric institutions for rehabilitation and psychiatric Outpatient chinics have rapidly increased. Short of Psychiatrists (9.4 persons per 10,000 population), nurese (59/10,000), psychiatric social workers (59/10,000), clinical psychologist, and other professionals, and excessive long stay inpatients and polypharmacy in the treatment are pointedout. In Japan, about 85% of the psychiatric hospitals have been cocupied with private mental hospitals. This it is not easy to decrease inpatisnt beds. Our society (JSPN) established the committee of medical policies of Psychiatric (CMPP) and we have a plan to make a framework of mental health system available to characteristics of Japan in one to two years. Based on the common concepts among the various associations and societies of psychiatry, we will obtain the framework of mental health system and propose it to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
