orea is quickly developing a comprehensive mental health services system in each community. The government has invested in a community-based, public mental health system rather than institution-based system, but the average length of stay in mental hospital is still too long. In order to reduce the length of stay, more residential facilities are needed. However, social stigma makes it difficulf to reintegrate people with mental disorders into the community, as the government has plan to achieve in their mental health care agenda for 2020. The new government plans to develop policy on mental health promotion to provide mental health servives general population, suicide prevention, program for substance abuse and program for people in the early stage of psychosis. The next steps to develop mental health services in Korea will be to improve community-based, public mental health services, as well the monitoring system in each catchment area and province. Also, linkages with the primary health care system, the education system, and the judicia system should be strengthened through trainings and distribution of information about mental helth. In order to transfrom mental health system with limited resources, the government should develop and establish a monitoring and information system of good quality and efficiency. Finally, there should be a program of long-term, ongoing research that examines the effectiveness of the country's mental health services.
