India accounts for a meager 204 percent of the world surface area but support 16.7 percent of the world population. The only meta-analysis to date of Indian epidemiologic studies shows that mental disorders affect 5.8% of the population. The mental health infrastructure in the country is far from satisfactory with only 0.2 psychiatrists per 100,000 population and 0.25 psychiatric beds per 10,000 populations. There is a huge state wise divide in mental health services with 1/3rd of mental health beds concentrated in one state while several states have no mental health facilities. The health budget allocation for mental health is only 2.05% of the total health budget and the many national programs and district mental health programs are in their nascent state. The lack of proper undergraduate psychiatric training. The lack of standardization of postgraduate training and the lack of awareness regarding common mental disorders among primary care physicians hinders the timely detection and proper management of mental illnesses. Psychiatrists in private sector, around 60% or more. Contribute heavily to the mental health care in India. The Mental Health Act 87, though a landmark achievement, still needs to fine-tune to cover the myriad lacunae in the mental health system. Therefore much needs to be done to improve the mental health scenario in the country by 2020 with improved competency standards of professionals. Private-public participation.co-coordinated teaching and training programs by profession als organizations, efficient net-working with regional and International agencies and proper timely advocacy with mental health policy makers.
