รายละเอียด / Details:

The phenomenal advancement in psycho-pharmacology and cognitive therapies in psychiatry have lulled many into believing that Asian countries are advancing in the field of mental health almost as fast as they are in internal medicine, surgery or pediatrics. Asia is largest continent with a population of 3.4 billion, which make up over half the world ppulation. Asia has some of the richest countries, billionaires and most developed economies. Hpwever it also has some of the poorest countries in the world. Mental health the situation in Asia is sadly very dismal. Most if not all the population in Asia have very little access and low quality of basic mental health care. This is because Asian gives low priority of mental health in health allocations that result from misconceptions, gross ignorance and entrenched prejudices against mental disorders. The,number of train psychiatrists is low, approximately 1 per 100,000. Additionally the distribution of trained psychiatric personnel is overwhelmingly concentrated in urban areas. Abuse of the mentally ill, discrimination and under treatment is very common. The mental health needs of Asian countries are largely related to provision of basic mental health care in Primary Care settings in all countries, rather than in mental hospitals or specialized clinics. To do this, Asian countries need to review and revise the teaching curricula of medical, nursing and health care personnel to focus less on psychoses and more on anxiety and depression. There should be smaller short-stay psychiatric care wards for acute care and day rehabilitation centre for long-term care. Counseling and cognitivio systems of therapies need to be taught in their basic forms to all clinical care personnel who deal with patients in all settings. Mental health laws, policies and strategies are important. For the critical mass to be part of decision making process, there is a need for enough seaior officer in Ministry of Health to possess basic understanding of the importance of mental health in health, which in most Asian countries is still, very sadly missing.
