Investigators are using data from national studies to address pertinent questions on addiction; however, the assessment used are not comprehensive regarding quantity, freguency (Q/F) and the duration of illicit drug use due to time constraints. The Substance Abuse Module (DSM) The SAM also covers Q/F of use during the period of heaviest use and the duration of this period, along with age of onset and recency of use. The DSM V Committee has become interested in the age old question of how Q/F is associated with abuse and dependence. As a first step to addressing this sue, we have evaluated data collected over about 8 years from our NIDA funded nosology studies, specifically focused on these types of issues, Data from 939 cannabis users, who are 58% male, 43% African American, 34% never married and 60% out of treatment, 12 to 66 years of age show that during their heaviest period of cannabis use, they used an average of 5 day/week for about 3 years. The amount of joints per day is a function of the type of administration and data are still being analyzed to convert hits, joints, grams, gags and other units reported. When users were stratified bi frequency and duration of use into quartiles, we found, as hypothesized, heavier users were more likely to meet criteria for dependence, and each criterion, with 50% of the heaviest users meeting dependence criteria, 40% in the 3rd guartile meeting criteria, 29% and 11% in the 2nd and 1st quartile meeting dependence. Nearly half of the daily users met criteria, while none of the less than monthly did. However, 26% of daily users did not meet criteria and 23% only met 1 or less criterion. More detailed analyses will be presented, though it is clear that there is a linear relationship to dependence (full blown diagnosis as well as in individual criteria) with frequency, duration, and quantity (from preliminary analyses). This association will be used to help the DSM committee determine the usefulness of such a criterion item for predicting addiction and for understanding the clinical usefulness of collecting information.
