Recent neuroimaging studies have demonstrated brain atrophy in alcoholics, and these morpholgical changes are considered as a result of neural network impairment, which plays an important role in the pathophysiology of alcoholism. First, this presentation will discuss the role of ethanol-induced neurogenesis suppression in the pathogenesis of alcoholism. Ethanol suppresses neuronal ttem cell differentiation to neuron even at a concentration level that does not affect the neuron survival, indicating alcohol-induced alteration of neurogenesis is responsible for the neural network impairment in the brain of alcoholics. Next, the presentation will introduce a transplantation of neural stem cells (NSCs) to the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) model. The purpose of this transplantation is to reconstruct impaired neural network and to investigate the possibility of regeneratve therapy for children with alcohol induced neurobehavior deficits, now defind as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) Because it has been long believed that there is a limitation to CAS repair, now there is a great interest in the possibility of repairing central nervous system by transplanting cells, which could replace lost ones through damage or disease. Then, the presentation will show potentoal migration of transplanted NSCs into the brain by visualizing fluorescent cell marker and RI and differentiation of transplanted neural stem cells to each phenotype of cells by immunofluorescence assay. Finally, the presentation will show the recovery of behavioral abnormality of FAS model rat by evaluating its anxiety- like behavior and cognitive function.
