รายละเอียด / Details:

Since the first antidepressant was introduced to Korea, many antidepressants have been launched, and almost every antidepressant medication is available nowadays in Korea. While the introduction of antidepressant was a major breakthrough in the treatment of depression, it also gave rise to the side effects such as dry mouth. Insomnia or weight gain that have burdened the patients and worsened their compliance. SSRI, SNRI and do not have as many side effects as TCA or MAOI. For this reason, these new antidepressants usually replace the use of TCA or MAOI in Korea. Despite advancementsant and depression research, most clinical psychiatrists do not set up treatment goals and treat their patients bases on their subjective decisions. This is because symptoms of psychiatric disorders are neither visible nor can they be measured in numeric value of laboratory tests. Thus more systematic and reasonable treatment of depression would require the establishment of appropriate treatment guideline that fits to Koreans and governmental support of medical insurance system. Moreover, pharmacogenetic and brain imaging studies may enhance treatment strategies for depression by providing biological predictors of antidepressant drug response. These fields of study are recognized as a promising area for depression research and there has been a considerable development of the studies recently in Korea.
