รายละเอียด / Details:

There are a number of issues about "Depression in Japan". First is suicide prevention . Suicide in Japan has counted more than 30,000 deaths since 1998. Urged by this daunting fact, the Japanese government has been conducting anational project to prevent suicide since 2005 and passed Suicide Prevention Law in 2006. The national project is composed of two components; one is community-based intervention and the other is emergency case follow-up. The results of this project have started to be publishhed. Second is the availability of anti-depressant. In Japan a number of internationally used anti depressants are not available. This has created a concern since the benefits from pharmacotherapy are compromised and there is a movement to facilitate the clinical trial and the approval processes in Japan. Third is the spread of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). CBT is becoming widely practiced. In the near future, CBT will make up a principal, non-pharmacological treatment modality. Fourth is the aid to return to work for company employees, whohave taken extended sick leave due to depression. There has been atrial program since 1997 and currently aresearch to assess the effectiveness of this program is going on. Obviously the interventions to population with depression with depression require collaboration among many disciplines. In order to coordinate these efforts, the Japanese Society of Mood Disorder was established in 2004 and has been instrumental to widen the basis of anti-depression activities across the many spheres of the society.
