รายละเอียด / Details:

Increasing evidence show that major depression is associated with the in flammatory changes represented by the increased production of pro-inflammatory mediators. It can be presumed that if inflammation plays a causative role in the pathogenesis of major depression, antidepressants could suppress such inflammation. In fact, accumulating evidence indicate that various types of antidepressants cansuppress the serum/plasma levels of pro-inflammatory mediators in patients with major depression and inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory mediators by immune cells including glial cells, the main sources and targets of cytokines in the brain. This review summarizes the evidence showing that antidepressants have anti-inflammatory potentials. The putative mechanisms of anti-inflammatory action of antidepressants are also discussed. Based on the anti-inflammatory effects of antidepressants, the drugs could also be preventives for neurodegenerative dementia including including Alzheimer disease, whose patthogenesis is well shown to involve the chronic inflammation associated with activated microglia.
