รายละเอียด / Details:

Training tomorrow's ASEAN psychiatrists is one of challenges of the AFPMH. The variation in economic health and social -cultural landscape of ASEAN means that training will have to be tailor to the needs of the individual country. The education of many generations of psychiatrists in ASEAN has been influenced by curricula and concepts from the west. During the colonial era, doctors were sent to Europe or America for specialization and they returned home to develop psychiatric services in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Philipines, etc The 'Maudsley model may be ideal but not appropriate in a seting where mental health resources are scarce or meager. We should adopt some of the ideas and traditions in service or teaching, and adapt them more appropriately in the local community. Experience of many relief, workers in the Tsunami disaster has indicated the manifold roles of the psychiatrist. The Research in East Asia of Psychotropic prescriptions (REAPP) initiated by Prof Shinfuku and Prof Tan Chay Hoon shows differences in practice among psychiatrists in this region. The results can help us plan a better terching program for psychopharmacology. Another issue is psychotherapy training. It is important for Asean psychiatrists to conceive ideas and techniques, which are more appropriate and relevant to the culture of the community. Many trainees in the Asean have expressed interest in psycological therapy and are eager to learn skills, which are applicable for their practice in busy clinics. Good teachers and role models have been emphasized in many recent publications (2). They play a crucial role in inspiring future medical students to pursue a career in psychiatry.
