Significant efforts in the Asia Pacific region have been made to develop community-based mental health services in line with international recommendations (WHO, 2003). Community psychosocial rehabilitation services provide better and earlier care for people with mental disorders, help preserve the human rights of mental illness sufferers, and limit the stigma of mental health treatment. Governments and service providers however of ten face challenges in the development and implementation of locally appropriate community mental health care and services due to the diversity in cultures and health systems in the region. Asia-Australia Mental Health is a consortium of the University of Melbourne and St. Vincent’s Health established in 2003. AAMH partners academic, government, health sector community and peak bodies in Asia and Australia to improve community mental health services and outcomes in the Asia Pacific region. In collaboration with regional countries, training programs are mutually developed and are designed for a range of expertise including clinical, managerial, governmental and community roles that promotes capacity building and the development of local training centers. Developing cooperative links high level and multi sect oral regional partners are essential to promote better mental health care models, and psychosocial service delivery. All AAMH initiatives and programs are collaboratively planned and delivered and are sensitive to the cultures in which they operate. A flagship regional project is the Asia Pacific Community Mental Health Development Project involving 14 countries. Based on the exchange of regional experience and research, appropriate educational materials are also developed to be use as a regional resource.
