There is increased recognition that bipolar disorder has an earlier age of onset. The prevalence in adolescence is approximately 1%. The clinical presentation is often considered atypical, chronic symptom and/or rapid mood cycle. Severe irritability, compared to those in adulthood. Co-morbid disorders, most common attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, complicate both the diagnosis and course of the disorder. Course appears to be chronic and outcome significantly associated with poor academic and social performance, legal problem and increased risk of suicide. Downward extension from adult treatment. Mood stabilizers and atypical antipsychotics are generally considered the first line of treatment. Behavioral and psychosocial therapies are also indicated. However, there is significant controversy surrounding the definition and continuity of this condition, whether the pediatric bipolar disorder and the classic adult bipolar disorder represent the illness.
