The purpose of the study was to estimate the prevalence rates of suicide risk of Thai adolescents studying in academic institutions at the level of upper secondary school and vocational school-based survey. The samples were the upper secondary school and vocational certificate students enrolling in the academic year 2003, both public and private schools. The total of 13,053 students was selected by multi-stage stratified cluster sampling. The study instrument was a self-administrated questionnaire consisting of a battery of tests: general questions and suicide risk investigation. The statistics were number, percent, mean, and multiple logistic regression for identify the factors associated with suicide risk Results: The average age of the samples was 17.86 years. Nearly 60% were female and approximately 40% were male. Around two-thirds were secondary school students and around one-thirds was vocational school students. Most students were Buddhist. About a half of the samples had a last average grade point between 2.00 and 2.99. The prevalence of suicide risk in adolescence was 50.5%. 39.9 % of Thai upper secondary school and vocational school students had suicide risk or depression. The significant risk factors for suicide risk and depression included female, Christianity, parental divorce/separation, and not living with parents. The significant protective factors were vocational schools, GAP 1.00-2.99, and father’s unemployment/looking for job. About one-tenths (10.6%) of Thai upper secondary school and vocational school students had high risk suicide. The significant risk factors for high suicide risk included female, vocational school students, Christianity, GAP 1.00-2.99, parental divorce/separation, not living with parents, live with other family, father’s and mother’s unemployment/looking for job, and father education at bachelor’s degree or higher. Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that the problems of suicide risk among Thai upper secondary school and vocational school students were high, In addition, the study results can be used for policy formulation to solve problems.
