This qualitative research aimed to examine mental self care and prolonged life in HIV infected individuals. Target group was recruited using purposive and snowballing techniques among HIV infected persons in Chiang Mai province who were health and lived more than 10 years after being diagnosed with AIDS. Data was colleted by in-dept interview, focus group, and participatory observations and was analyzed using content analysis approach. The-results showed that being lived long among HIV persons involved with 5 principles of self mental care. They were acceptance of the illness, adjustment to the illness, mind relaxation, holiness (having faith in religion), and dependence on support and assistance from close relatives. The findings can used to develop a program to appropriately promote mental self care in HIV infected persons and improve their quality of life and life extension.
