Caregivers of persons with schizophrenia who received caregiving skills training and knowledge influenced in more effective caregiving and also perceived less caregiving stress. The aim of this pretest-posttest follow-up control group quasi experimental research was to examine the effect of the psychiatric family caregiving program on caregiving stress among caregivers of persons with schizophrenia and medication adherence of patients with schizophrenia. Thirty schizophrenic patients and thirty caregivers of persons with schizophrenia who received services at the outpatient department at Suan Prung Psychiatric hospital, Chiang Mai province, were purposively selected and equally assigned into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received the psychiatric family caregiving program while control group received usual care. Research instruments consisted of 1) instrument for conducting research: the psychiatric family caregiving program developed by Patraporn Tungpunkom and associates (2005), instruments for collecting data: 1) demographic data, 2) the caregiving stress of caregiver scale developed by Atcharawan Treeyuang and Patraporn Tungpunkom, reliability obtained by using Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of 0.88, and 3) the medication adherence of psychiatric patient developed by Sathuporn Putkaow, reliability obtained by using Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of 0.90,. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, two-way repeated measures analysis of variance, and independent t-test. The results of this study demonstrated that; 1.Mean score of the caregiving stress of caregivers was significantly different before and after receiving the psychiatric family caregiving program immediately (p‹.001), and at the one-month follow-up period (p<.05), and there were no significant mean score of caregiving stress between after receiving the psychiatric family caregiving program immediately, and at the one-month follow-up period. 2.Mean score of the caregiving stress of caregivers in the experimental group after receiving the psychiatric family caregiving program immediately, and at the one-month follow-up period was statistically and significantly lower than that of control group, at a level of .001. Mean score of medication adherence of patient with schizophrenia who caregivers received the psychiatric family caregiving program was significantly different before and after receiving the program immediately (p<.001), and at the one-month follow-up period (p<.001), and there were no significant mean score of medication adherence between after receiving the psychiatric family caregiving program immediately, and at the one-month follow-up period. 4.Mean score of medication adherence of patient with schizophrenia who caregivers received the psychiatric family caregiving program was statistically and significantly higher than that of control group in both after receiving the program immediately, and at the one-month follow-up period, at a level of .001. The results of this study indicated that participating in the psychiatric family caregiving program can decrease caregiving stress of caregivers and also result in caregivers to encourage patients for increasing medication adherence of patients with schizophrenia. Therefore, mental health care providers especially in the psychiatric hospital should apply this program for releasing caregiving stress among caregivers and provide effectively caring to enhance medication adherence of patients with schizophrenia as well as also decreasing readmission.
