รายละเอียด / Details:

The impact of tsunami generated by the earthquake in Sumatra on December 26, 2004 was devastating Over 230,000 people lost their lives and some 430,000 homes across South-East Asia were destroyed in barely 24 hours. In Thailand, six southern provinces along the Andaman coastline were severely affected. The Thai Government reported the fatalities of 8,212 and missing people of 2,817, which included non-Thai casualties from 37 other countries. An estimated 50,000 children were impacted by the tsunami and an approximated 1,480 children lost one or both parents. The author presents the recovery process in Thailand, involving both governmental and non-governmental organizations, with special emphasis on work done with children and adolescents. A collaborative project featuring volunteer psychiatrists and mental health personnel from several organizations has been formed and in action right after the tsunami to facilitate the recovery, and also to learn how to respond better with future disasters. The progress of the project is presented, with some challenging questions are still waiting for answers. The treatment of the children identified as PTSD with cognitive behavioral therapy, individually and in-group format is highlighted in detail.
