Background : At the present, many atypical antipsychotic drugs are developed. The use of antipsychotic drugs in patient with schizophrenia has changed from the past. The objective of this report was to study the trend of using and the factors that influenced in using antipsychotic medications in patients with schizophrenia at Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry. Method : The descriptive study was done by review the medical records of sample patients who was diagnosed schizophrenia and discharged from Domdet Chaopraya of Psychiatry in 1995 and 2005. We study type of antipsychotic drugs and the relation between type of antipsychotic drugs and factors that influence usage of antipsychotic drugs in schizophrenic inpatients. Result : We reviewed sample from schizophrenic patients that are discharged in 1995 (N=336) and 2005 (N=315). We Found that the use of conventional antipsychotic drugs are decreased (55.6% in 1995 to 44.4% in 2005), the use of atypical antipsychotic drugs are increased (16.7% in 1995 to 83.3% in 2005) and the use of combination antipsychotic drugs increased (0.3% in 1995 to 1.6% in 2005), significantly (p=0.00). Patient's general data such as age, occupation, duration of illness, number of admission and underlying disease significantly associate with prescription of antipsychotic drugs. Conclusion : In this study, between 1995 and 2005, trends in use of antipsychotic drugs in schizophrenic inpatients at Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry, we found that atypical antipsychotic drugs demonstrate more significant prescription than conventional groups. Age, occupation, duration of illness, number of admission, duration of admission and underlying disease demonstrate significant relation with the use of atypical antipsychotic drugs.
