Objective : To study the definition, symptom, related factors, assessment tools, prevention and intervention of burnout. Method : A literature search was conducted using the key words burnout, job stressors, staff turnover and burnout assessment. Result : Burnout is a prolonged response to chronic emotional and interpersonal stressors on the job. It can occur among individuals who work in human services organizations and health care. One of the causes of burnout is work overload serving diverse and demanding clients. Burnout has negative consequences for workers, clients, and the larger organization. The workers will have adverse effects both physically and psychologically. They may be absent more frequently from work and perform poorly or even consider leaving the job. Furthermore, burnout may be transmitted from one person to another. The most influential definition of burnout is described by the three dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. The review presents research results on the factors related to burnout including age, marital status, personality type, occupations, and experience on the job. The most widely used psychological instrument to quantify burnout is Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), which will be discussed. Burnout should be prevented and intervened in both individual and organization levels. These include providing information, developing stress management skills, adjusting a proper work-life balancce, rotating job responsibilities, providing emotional support, exchanging and sharing experiences, and providing clinical supervision. Conclusion : Burnout has impact on individual as well as diminished work quality and organization. Therefore, organizations should gain deeper understanding of burnout in order to properly plan for prevention and intervention at the early stage.
