รายละเอียด / Details:

Sleep is vital to children’s growth, physical and mental health. When children sleep, they rest, gain energy and alertness for a new day and growth hormone is secreted. Sleep provides the opportunity to dream, in which children process all the events of their daily life, consolidating memory and reorganize for future learning. Without adequate sleep, one feels exhausted and irritable. The development of sleep pattern, duration and quality of sleep depend on a child’s age, temperamental character, and parenting style and sleep environment. Sleep problems in young children can reflect health and development tal-behavioral problems, such as illness, obstructive sleep apnea, adjustment reaction to school entry and inappropriate sleep environment. At the same time it may predispose the child to subsequent mental and behavioral problems such as: impaired attention, hyperactivity, irritability, agitation, aggressive behavior, learning problems, substance abuse and conduct disorder. Children who get enough sleep are more likely to function better and are less prone to behavioral problems and moodiness. That is why it is important for parents to start early and help their children develop good sleep habits. In addition, the children’s sleep pattern influences the entire family’s life and wellbeing. Recent situation concerning with shorter sleep duration, chronic sleep deprivation, among children and adolescents with increasing prevalence of mental health problems, makes it necessary to promote healthy sleep habit and adequate sleep as a part of health promotion.
