This study sought describe the meaning of self-care and specific self-care experiences of clients after psychological therapy for drug addiction. A phenomenological methodology was used. The participants were 12 voluntary post-therapy clients dwelling in the community. Data collection was performed using tape-recorded in-depth interviews which were transcribed. Data from the transcripts and field notes were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method. This study found that self-care meant that significant changes to start a new life would be made and a normal life was attainable. The meaning of “life changes” was becoming a new person; beginning the new life was viewed as changing from living death to living; self-care allows one to live normally like others; and it makes for a happy life. Four themes of self-care experiences emerged, including seeking encouragement from family members, friends, and others in community. Developing the mental ability to control themselves by avoiding substance abuse through self-talk was also viewed as important; participants expressed that everything depended on their mindset (stop thinking about drugs, think about other things instead, refuse to take drugs, etc). The third theme concerned engaging in activities that provide benefit to themselves and others in their family and community so as keeping busy, earning a living, and participating in social activities that make life meaningful. Finally, self-care involved constructing a better life through effectively caring for their health, better mental health, being happy and living independently in society. In conclusion, the essence of self-care among clients recovering from drug addiction was life-adjustment through providing physical response, mental and thought self-control to abandon drug use, and experiencing life amelioration. These finding are beneficial for psychiatric nurses and mental health professionals in their efforts to improve care for drug addicted clients reintegrated into the community.
