The objectives of this paper is to i) examine the clinical outcomes obtained with CPs and ii) share our experiences on CP implementation. Methods: Data mining conducted on clinical pathway utilization from 2003 to 2007. The results were analyzed using excel program. Results: 1. Rapid development of CPs : Eleven CPs to guide staff to manage major diseases. 2. Increased usage of CPs : In 2007,3038 patients placed on CPs compared to 981 in 2003. 3. Increase percentage placement of patients admitted with CP criteria eligibility: 49% in 2004 to 68% in 2007. 4. Reduction and stabilization of average length of stay for patients on CP: Dementia (28.3 days in 2005, 22.7 days in 2007),First Episode Schizophrenia (17.9 days in 2004, 15.3 days in 2007), Alcohol Dependence (20.4 days in 2004, 12.7 days in 2007), 5. Reduction in unplanned readmission rates for patients on CP: In 2006, First Episode Schizophrenia registered 3.6%, Relapsed Schizophrenia 4.8%, Alcohol Dependence and Opiate Dependence 3% each as compared to the hospital’s KPI of 9% Conclusion: The implementation of CPs ensures standardized care, promotes multidisciplinary collaboration and better resource utilization thus ensuring better clinical outcomes. However to achieve this, we advocate strong management support, staff participation and clinician commitment.
