Abstract Objective The objective of the present study was to review existing, relevant literature to compare the meanings of “mental health” and “happiness” in the context of the Thai society. The review was based on our previous work to develop the Thai mental health indicator. Method An analysis was conducted to compare the four domains of mental health derived from the previous study--mental state, mental capacity, mental quality, and supporting factors--with the definition of happiness in the context of the Thai society in the religious, academic, and general public’s viewpoints. Results The findings of the study revealed that the meanings of “mental health” from our previous study and “happiness” in the view of the Buddhists, the academics, and the general public are similar. Conclusions The Thai mental health indicator should be renamed as the Thai happiness indicator for ease and convenience in distributing it to the wider public.
