Objective; This research aim to study the prevalence of depression,diagnoses and factors associated with depression in psychiatric patients who gambled on the World Cup 2006 football matches. Method: The sample consisted of 46 patients. The Mini - international Neuropsychiatric interview and clinical observation were used as means of data collection. The diagnoses were made according to the American Psychiatric Associations diagnosis criteria (DSM IV). Datas were ststistically in terms of frequency distributions, percentages, means, standard deviations, chi-square tests, and cotent analyses. Results: Thestudy revealed that 97.8% of the samples were suffering fromdepression,with the male to female ratio of 1.9:1. Diagnosis of patients with depression were major depressive disorder, adjustmment disorders with depressed mood, and dysthymic disorder, which accounted for 84.7%, and 10.9% and 2.2% consegvently. Factors associated with depression were frquency of gambling and freqency of watching football matches on TV. Furthermore, the other factors which had been found to berelated to high incidence of depression of depression were being male, having a low income being unemployed, being divorced, having psychiatric disorder(s) and having a psychiatric family history. Conclusion: The prevalence rate of depression among outpatients whogambled on The World Cup 2006 matches was equal to 97.8% with major depressive disorders accounting for the highest number of the patients with depression.
