รายละเอียด / Details:

This study was conducted to correlate between factors causing depression and dementia in Parkinson's disease patients. It is a retrospective study performed by reviewing the clinical data of Parkinson's disease patients at Prasat Neurological Institute between August 2006 and December, 2007. One hundred and thirty patients were included in the study. All patients were evaluated for neurological conditions based on Mini-Mental State Examination: Thai version-MMSE-Thai 2002. The degree of anxiety and depression were scored based on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS): Thai version Evaluation of disease severity and clinical course of Parkinson's disease were evaluated according to Hoehn and Yahr staging. It was shown that anxiety and dementia were correlated with patients who developed Parkinson's disease at older age (>59 years old). The degree of disease severity and progression of the disease were correlated significantly with depression and dementia in Parkinson's disease. With regards to sex, male patients were significantly at a higher risk of developing depression more than female Parkinson's disease patients. However, female patients were significantly at a higher risk for dementia than male patients. The results of this study will be beneficial for planning the treatment of patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, as well as to have a better outcome and a better quality of life.
