Objective: To determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with schizophrenia and the different prevalence between conventional and atypical antipsychotics. Methods: A Cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted by pooling 156 patients with schizophrenia at psychiatric outpatient clinic, Srinagarind Hospital from December 2006 to February 2008. Waist circumference, blood pressures were measured and blood sugar, triglyceride, HDL after fasting was recorded. MetS was diagnosed by using International Diabetes Federation criteria 1. Results: The prevalence of MetS was 15.4%, which was higher in atypical (20%) than conventional antipsychotics (9.4%). In Stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis. MetS was correlated atypical antipsychotics (OR=3.3, 95% CI=1.1-10.1,p=0.04) and a family history of hypertension (OR=3.2, 95% CI=1.1-9.8,p=0.04). Female was correlated with the used of atypical antipsychotics (OR=4.9, 95% CI=0.8-28.2,p=0.08). Male was associated with using the combination of conventional and atypical antipsychotics (OR=3.4, 95%CI=0.5-24.2, p=0.22). Conclusion: The prevalence of MetS in Thai patients with schizophrenia was 15.4%, which was lower than CATIE study. Factors associated with MetS were atypical antipsychotics used and family history of hypertension with statistical significance.
