Objective: The study aimed to: ii) estimate the prevalence of depressive disorders in outpatients of community hospitals located in Chiang Mai and Lamphun and ii) examine the association of depression and alcohol use disorders. Methodology: Five community hospitals were purposively selected from the total of 28 community hospitals in Chiang Mai and Lamphun. Every 5 outpatients aged 15 years or more were sequentially assessed until the sample being up to 400 patients. Trained psychiatric nurses interviewed the participants by using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.) Thai version Module A (for Major Depressive Episode).Module B (for Dysthymia), and Module C (for Suicidality). The Alcohol Use DisorderIdentification Test (AUDIT) was also applied for screening the alcohol drinking problem with confirmation diagnosis by using M.I.N.I. Module J (for Alcohol Abuse and Dependence). Result: A total of 405 patients (155 men and 250 women) with a mean (SD) age of 47.9 (15.8) years participated in the study. The prevalence of all current depressive disorders was 8.8% (6.5% for major depressive disorder and 2.3% for current dysthymic disorder). 42.1% and 26.3% of those with current depressive disorders were comorbid with moderate to high risks of suicidality and alcohol use disorders, respectively. Conclusion: Depressive disorders are common in outpatients of community haspitals. Suicidality and alcohol use disorders are common comorbidities in community hospital outpatients with current depressive disorders. Therefore, the community hospital should consider the integrated health services system that can identify the depressive patients at outpatient clinic and provide an appropriate management.
