The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists is undertaking a major review of its education activities. This includes its current regulations governing training of psychiatrists. In this talk I will review the history of training of Psychiatrists in Australia and New Zealand, describe the current process and criticisms that have been made of it. The current medico-political environment, in which psychiatry is practiced in Australia and New Zealand will be described and the implications of this for training of future generations of psychiatrists.
