In order to get better cooperation in that the patients with alcohol dependence will continue on the treatment plan, it is important for a nurse to be aware of readiness for treatment of this patients. This may result in a change of drinking behavior of the patients with a favorable outcome. The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine the level of readiness for treatment of patients with alcohol dependence at Suan Prung Psychiatric hospital. Purposive sampling was used to select 190 patients who presented themselves for treatment at the out-patient department of Suan Prung Psychiatric hospital, Chiang Mai province, during March to April 2006. The study instrument was a questionnaire set in two parts; the Demographic Data and the Stage of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale (SOCRATES-8A), developed by Miller and Tonigan (1996) and translated into Thai by Pichai Sangchanchai (2003) and further modified by Phunnapa Kittirattanapaiboon (2004). The Pearson’s product moment coefficient of the questionnaire was 0.84. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The results revealed that patients with alcohol dependence at Suan Prung Psychiatric hospital, Chiang Mai province had moderate level of recognition (x=32.20, SD=1.93), high level of ambivalence (x=17.20, SD=1.60), and moderate level of taking steps (x=33.11, SD=4.07). The study results can be used as basic information to plan and develop an intervention to prepare for readiness of treatment of patients with alcohol dependence.
