Stroke is a common neurological problem and a major health problem in the nation. The main purpose of this descriptive research was to assess the level of stress and coping styles including correlation among the caregivers characteristics and levels of stress of caregivers of stroke patients who attended the inpatient medicine department in Udonthani Hospital, Udonthani Province from April to July, 2008. A hundred and four subjects were randomized. The instruments used in this study were the Demographic Data Interview From, the Perceived Stress Questionaire (PSQ), and the Jalowiec Coping Scale (JCS). Data were collected by research assistants and analyzed the demographic data and caregivers stress by descriptive statistics and the correlationof caregivers characteristics and level of stress was tested by Chi-square test. The results of this study revealed that the stress's level of most stroke patient's caregivers were at high to moderate level (57.6% and 31.7% respectively). Most stroke patient's caregivers used the confrontive coping styles (69.2%) followed by palliative and emotive styles (21.1% and 9.6% respectively). Also, caregiver perception of health atatus, receiving information about disease and training skill of stroke's patient care had significantly correlations with level of stress of stroke's caregiver (p = .022, p = .038 และ p = .047 respectively) whereas age, sex, education, occupation, experience of care, and caregiver perceived of relationship with nurse's professional do not significantly correlate with level of stress. This findings concluded that nurses should educate the stroke's caregiver about the stroke disease and train the essential skill for stroke's caregiver to care the stroke's patient at home which can reduce the stress of stroke's caregiver, help them to coping with stress and perception of their health status are important for stroke's patient care.
