รายละเอียด / Details:

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada has recently (2008) promulgated new requirements for training in psychiatry. These requirements will shape the future of our profession in North America. The new requirements entail five years of specialty training. Each of the first three years is highly structured with concurrent and longitudinal training. The third and fourth years allow for some individual variation. Within the period of training, residents are expected to achieve competencies in each of six CanMEDS roles: Medical Expert; Scholar; Communicator; Collaborator; Professional; Manager and Health Advocate. Proficiency in these important roles is to be developed through key educational experiences, which will be presented and discussed. In addition to the new approach to competency based training, a number of additional challenges have been identified with regard to the training of future psychiatrists. These include the need for specialized training for clinician scientists, the integration of international medical graduates into training in North America and the modification of the CanMEDS roles in order to train physicians in low and middle income countries. Strategies, which have been developed to address these issues will be presented and discussed.
