The Objective of this study was to study diagnostic stability of functional psychoses, pattern of diagnostic change, and factors related to diagnostic stability. Methods : Data were obtained from hospital records of all first admissions in Somdet Chaopraya Hospital between January 1, 1988 to December 31,1988. Only patients who were diagnosed as functional psychoses according to ICD-9 criteria and were readmitted at least one time during a five- year follow up period were selected. Diagnostic stability means measurement of degree to which psychiatric diagnosis remained unchanged at a later admission. Results : 360 patients with functional psychoses were studied. High degree of diagnostic stability were found in the initial diagnoses of schizophrenia (83.92 %), followed by affective psychoses (57.53%). Low degree of stability were found in the initial diagnoses of other nonorganic psychoses (3.57%) and paranoid states (0 %) .The pattern of diagnostic change were described. Factors related to diagnostic stability were examined and discussed.
