Problems of alcohol dependence produce dramatic costs to society in terms of lost productivity, social disorder and avoidable health care utilization. Based on reasonable expectations of addiction treatments, clinical trials have shown effectiveness of treatment strategies. Besides psychosocial aspects, various studies have focused on neurotransmitter and recepter systems that may be implicated in alcohol tolerance and dependence. Acamprosate, a GABAergic agonist is one of the relatively new drugs that yield promising result. This article discusses the possible mechanisms of action of acamprosate as well as reviews animal and human studies that support the use of acamprosate in the treatment of alcohol dependence.
