Abstract Mental health problems of people living in municipal slum communities in Muang District, Kanchanaburi were studied during June 1997 by using the Thai GHQ-28. By systematic random sampling, 250 cases were selected from 1,487 individuals whose age were 18 and over. The prevalence of mental health problem was 22.0% and the statistical significant factors (P ‹ 0.05) were age, marital status, educational level, incomes, physical illness, a serious illness of family member, lose of job, marital problem, problem with family member, financial problem and the satisfaction with one’s work. The study has reflected the importance of the bio-psycho-social of holistic care in public health services, and suggested that more attention be paid to the elderly people because of the high prevalence of mental health problems in this group. Further studies among different types of communities were recommended.
