Objectives The primary care physicians’ attitudes toward psychiatry and factor influencing the attitudes were investigated. Methods A questionnaire comprising fifteen 4-point scale items was sent to 1,500 primary care physcians. Four aspect of attitudes towards psychiatry included in the questionnaire were: psychiatric patients and psychiatric illness (5 items), needs about psychiatric treatment skills (3 items), attitudes to psychiatric treatments (5 items) and attitudes to psychiatry as a medical subject (2 items). Factors influence the attitudes such as number of practice experience years, specialty, the school of graduation and number of out patients per day were explored by mean of one-way ANOVA. Results Six hundred and seventeen physicians (41.1%), covering all medical schools and geographic regions, returned the questionnaire. The mean scores of all aspects of attitudes towards psychiatry were found to be different among the schools (p‹0.05). The mean scores of attitudes toward patients and psychiatric illness and needs for psychiatric treatment skills were associated with number of graduate years and the school of graduation ( p<0.05). Total scores of attitudes to psychitry as a medical subject was associated with medical school. ( p<0.05) Conclusions There are differences in attitudes toward psychiatry among primary care physicians graduating from different medical schools. This can be explained by the differences in training methods and contents of undergraduate psychiatric training of each medical school. The factors influencing attitudes towards psychiatry and primary care physicians’ need of psychiatric skills are interesting aspects of future research in the field of psychiatric education for medicial stude.
